About Household

The household is the basic unit of analysis in many [microeconomic] and [government] models. The term refers to all individuals who live in the same [dwelling].

Most [economic] models do not address whether the members of a household are a [family] in the traditional sense. Government and policy discussions often treat the terms household and family as synonymous, especially in [Western world] societies where the [nuclear family] has become the most common family structure. In reality, there is not always a one-to-one relationship between households and families.

Government definitions For statistical purposes in the [United Kingdom], a household is defined as "one person or a group of people who have the accommodation as their only or main residence and for a group, either share at least one [meal] a day or share the living accommodation, that is, a [living room] or sitting room" National Statistics.

The [United States Census] definition similarly turns on "separate living quarters", i.e. "those in which the occupants live and eat separately from any other persons in the building" . A householder in the U.S. census is the "person (or one of the people) in whose name the housing unit is owned or rented (maintained);" if no person qualifies, any adult resident of a housing unit is a householder. The U.S. government formerly used the term head of the household and head of the family to describe householders; beginning in [1980], these terms were officially dropped from the census and replaced with householder. U.S. Census: Current Population Survey - Definitions and Explanations

The official definition from http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/meta/long_71061.htm is much more understandable and clearer than the mess above:

"A household includes all the persons who occupy a housing unit. A housing unit is a house, an apartment, a mobile home, a group of rooms, or a single room that is occupied (or if vacant, is intended for occupancy) as separate living quarters. Separate living quarters are those in which the occupants live and eat separately from any other persons in the building and which have direct access from the outside of the building or through a common hall. The occupants may be a single family, one person living alone, two or more families living together, or any other group of related or unrelated persons who share living arrangements. (People not living in households are classified as living in group quarters.)"

Economic theories Most economic theories assume there is only one [income] stream to a household; this a useful simplification for modeling, but does not necessarily reflect reality. Some households now include multiple income-earning members.

Historical households In [feudalism] or [aristocracy] societies, a household may include [servant (domestic)]s or retainers, whether or not they are explicitly so named. Their roles may blur the line between a family member and an employee. In such cases, they ultimately derive their income from the household's principal income.

Household Insects?

Q) At night I hear a strange noise. Similar to clicking, but its very hard for me to describe this noise as ive never heard anything like this before. My 1st thought was a mouse but after putting traps out with no luck ive come to the conclusion its not - or it doesnt like cheese! Theres lots of junk under my bed so theres not much chance of me spotting it so just wondering if anyone knows of household insects. I only hear it during the middle of the night but it may be about during the day. Im pretty sure its not a cockroach as I know what they sound like, this isnt as loud. But it also sounds similar to when a flying insect hits its wings on windows etc. Its really puzzling me and its quite creepy too! Sorry I cant be more specific with the noise but it really is hard to describe it. Also the fact I have not seen it makes it more annoying. Maybe I will just have to clean out under my bed! Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks. Ha Ha! Thanks for all your answers, brilliant!! Its definately not in the walls, its under my bed. I know this for sure coz ive heard it closer to the bottom of my bed then a couple minutes later it was up by the head of the bed. I know I should just clean it out but its a very scary place, dark, dusty and full of daddy long legs! Im sure that when I finally do I will find the culprit for keeping me awake and making me sleep on the sofa coz I was scared! Thanks once again and I will write again if I eventually find this bloody thing!

A) it sounds like termites to me next time you hear it go to the wall and bang it with your hand if it is termites then the sudden noise will scare them and the solders will click there jaws to warn the others of danger this will also give you an indication of where else they are but my best advice to you is get a pest inspector in as soon as possible i just read the other answers ..the only other answer i feel may also be correct is the carpenter ant..you can hear them . termites make a clicking sound a bit like a clock but much faster most other insects will go quiet after you hit the wall as they are not protecting a nest

Household bills budget in UK??

Q) I'm thinking of moving out (will be renting), can people give me an idea of household bills- I know they'll be the things that drain all my money so I want to try and budget in advance! I know every town is different but an INDICATION would be great! Esp.in Bournemouth! Council tax? Water? Electricity? What else?? Many thanks! (ps tried googling, its all for students with no indication!) Thanks for the replies so far (pretty scary!!). I'm looking to move in with a friends so it'll be a two bedroom place.... if that makes a lot of difference?

A) A one bed flat would work out at about Rent £300 - 450 pm water £24pm Heating in winter £40 pm council tax £70 pm groceries £100- 300 + pm depends on lifestyle laundry £20 pm at laundrette cheaper if machine Bearing in mind the a one bed around here costs About £90000 to buy so adjust your rent accordingly. You can live very cheaply if you need to I have managed to do groceries for about £50 pm and bedsits or a shared house tend to have all utilities in with the rent which can make a great difference. We all seem to agree here but I forgot about the Tv bill( there are ways round that but best not go down that road). I would not bother with a land line, unless you need the internet, use a pay as you go mobile and limit yourself to £10 pm With food useown brand blue lable stuff it will save you loads.

Household Activites?

Q) Could people please spare a few minutes to fill in my questionnaire on household activities and lifestyles i need to get 100 any help would be great http://www.my3q.com/home2/122/scary_fairy2001/39417.phtml

A) I started answering your questionnaire but can't say it's very well set up. You can be a homeowner and own a flat/apartment or rent a flat or apartment... Household income... what currency are you talking about? Question 15 is marked with * but is "If no...." to previous question. I answered the previous question with yes so should skip Q15 but couldn't submit without answering it. There were a few other imperfections in the questionnaire, spelling errors etc. Next time read it over before submitting. I'm not trying to be mean or rude but it's not likely people take you seriously if you don't take the time to prepare your questinnaire. Good luck

household cleaner for soft top roof.?

Q) any tips for on what to use on black soft top roof? Tried several coates of black to black but still looking greyish. There must be a household cleaner that does a perfect job? black shoe polish? ? ?. olive oil? ? ? Anyone know? ? ?

A) If this is a vinyl top, go to Halfords and get some AutoGlym vinyl gel, and use that. Failing that, a company called Renovo do all manner of soft-top renovation products. If the hood is mohair or double-duck, then it needs very specialist treatment, and you may have ruined it already if this is the case.

Describe the households of Princes/ess in England and Monarchist France different from the Royal Household?

Q) Can someone describe the (past) differences of the households of Princes and Princesses granted the right to have a household separate from the Royal Household and what the "households" (as in the groupings of staff allowed specifically to them) of Princes and Princesses in the past were like? Even maybe today? I understand that they have their own household that was paid for by the State or Royal Treasury as well. In one page for France I found "A household was a collection of officers and employees, paid for out of the State's revenues, and constituted a miniature version of the royal administration, with military and civil officers, a council with a chancelor and secretaries, gentlemen-in-waiting, equerries, falconers, barbers and surgeons, a chapel, etc." But I want more of a description. What military and civil officers, so it was a full council with a chancelor and secretaries (What did they do?), where was their chapel located or that just means chaplain? What in England?

A) Yes, even today the Queen and the rest have private and usually a public chapel on their lands with a resident priest or minister, almost always of the Church of England (Anglican Church). That's where, when they 'retreat' to Balmoral (Scotland) they go to Sunday Services and when they head to one of the other Palaces they always have services there. The difference in England and France was the France was, for the most part, less traditional. France had a much 'looser' system of Royalty where almost everyone was related to someone else by marriage or blood (even though it maybe 4th cousin). Any Prince or Princess (usually married) is of a right to start their own household. The oldest (Crown Prince/ss) gets the largest and most organized household, of course. HRH Prince Charles has over 100 people working for him and his household, while his mother, the Queen only has 80 something. So, as long as he doesn't mind paying the extra tab, he can add who he wants. Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne all pay for their own households, of course their mother gives them so much every year since taking them OFF the Civil Lists. Prince Charles' household would be based VERY much on his mothers, just in case. Usually, they have a Private Secretary (the Queens is/was Princess Diana's brother-in-law (married Lady Sarah Spencer)). Then they have their own food staff and dresser (usually a lady-in-waiting, AND YES, SHE STILL HAS THESE!) Then she has people (2 men in grey) who schedule her appointments and keep her Private Secretary informed (and to her if need be about something) such as a scandal, etc.

Were household servants common for poor or middle-class American households during the 1950's?

Q) A friend tells me that her mother attests to the fact that she grew up poor and even has memories of not being able to afford the heating bill on at least 1 occasion. She is now 60, so that places here as a child during the 1950's I suppose. However, the strange thing is she always says that her family had a household servant to help with cooking, cleaning, etc. My friend's mother states that this help was extremely common and very easily affordable by most households. I have had a hard time finding any research in regards to this. Can anyone shed some light on this interesting subject?

A) I grew up in the 1940's..... Yes, it was very, very common to have a "maid", even for "middle class" people. Where was it common? Mostly in the South, the Texas to California border areas and California as a whole. All one has to do is scan the newspapers of that era, many are available in libraries and some on line. Who were these "maids"? Well in the South mostly African-American women, in the Southwest Mexicans and in California one should add in women from the Philippines. Roles: child care "babby sitting", doing the wash, ironing (was a big chore then) cleaning and cooking. Mostly "older" women, although in major Eastern and Midwest cities many "immigrant" younger women did such. So from Boston to Chicago, New York and the South one finds a vast labor" pool with no other job options. With 2-5 children a white or other family of "middle class" assets had a maid. I should also note most "lawn care" was accomplished by hired help, cheaper to pay someone than buy a mower for the small yards many had. So the classic Mexican or Japanese gardner is no myth. Realize that they contracted with perhaps a dozen or more families for their services. My father was a naval officer, my mother often worked part time as a registered nurse but we always from the 40's up to the early 1960's had a maid: some were Black, many were as noted above. Running a household in those days was near impossible chore for a wife who had say four kids. Trust me we see maids on those 1950's family TV shows. Older women, younger women had near zero job options. Good question. By the time my father gained rank after WWII, we had usually a cook, a maid and a person or family to maintain the property. We were not rich.

Head of household question?

Q) Head of household question. I am the "bread winner', and my boyfriend is a full time student, he made less that $3,300 last year and we've lived together for the full year of 2006. I've been researching the term head of household, and it appears to have more to do with someone who has a dependant family member. Is it possible for me to file as head of household rather than single status? Thanks in advance!

A) No, you do not qualify as head of household. Your boyfriend may meet the requirements to be your qualifying relative if the gross income and support tests are met, but he is not your qualifying person for head of household purposes. A person who is your qualifying relative only because he or she lived with you all year as a member of your household is not a qualifying person.

Head of Household question?

Q) ov 06 to a man holding h1b status. We are in the process of applying for a change of status for him. I still have a separate household where I support (independently) my mother and daughter (from a previous relationship.) We do have a son together which we both support. (Born last year) So..Can I still claim Head of Household on my taxes this coming year since I do have a separate household that he does not support? Or will I not be able to claim EIC any longer for my daughter? Our income is below the 85,000 limit listed on the W-4. I am beginning a new job and trying to sort my w-4 entries. Thanks!

A) You can claim your mother if you take care of her and provide more than half the support. You can claim your daughter. The EIC depends on what you made last year. Go to www.shaydzofluv.com and get a free estimate. They will be able to help you and get the most back for you.

Tax question - head of household??

Q) My live-in fiance claimed head of household on his taxes and claimed me as a dependent. I am actually head of household and pay all the bills and rent without assistance from him. I believe I should be able to claim him as a dependent and claim head of household myself. I do not want to get either of us in trouble, but he is getting a large tax return because he filed this claim instead of me. Does anyone know a solution to this situation. Can I claim head of household too and see what happens? Please help, as I think this situation is unfair. Should he get to reap all the benefits because he beat me to the punch? I read the definition of head of household, and in my opinion it does apply to me. I have also read the definition of dependent and since I pay for his living, food, etc. I believe this also applies.

A) You are not going to like the answer since it will cause a problem. Head of household is reserved for divorce parents where one parent has the child live with them for more than 1/2 year, 1 parent households, or a grandmother raising a grand child living with them. Claiming HOH for an adult (unless that adult is a full time student under 23 or legally disabled) will earn you both an audit. Your fiance has no right to claim a child that you have unless the child is his, lived in his household for more than 6 months, and contributed 1/2 the support. This is the part of the answer you are not going to like. Immediately report the illegal tax return to the IRS or have him file an ammended return. If you signed the document, you will need to do this now not later. Messing around with the IRS is nothing you want to do. I had a husband (got rid of him) who cheated on his taxes and it took me years to fix. I am being very serious run to the phone and call 1-800-829-1040. Good luck. Additional Information - you need to re-read here is the section Topic 353 - What is Your Filing Status? Generally, your marital status on the last day of the year determines your status for the entire year. If you are unmarried, or if you are legally separated from your spouse under a divorce or separate maintenance decree according to your state law, and you do not qualify for another filing status, your filing status is single. Generally, to qualify for head of household status, you must be unmarried and you must have paid more than half the cost of maintaining as your home a household that was the main home for a qualifying person for more than half the year. You may also qualify for head of household status if you, though married, file a separate return, your spouse was not a member of your household during the last six months of the tax year, and you provided more than half the cost of maintaining as your home a household that was the main home for more than one half of your tax year of a qualifying person. If you are married, you and your spouse may file a joint return or separate returns. If your spouse died and you did not remarry in the year that your spouse died, you may still file a joint return for that year. This is the last year for which you may file a joint return with that spouse. You may be able to file as a qualifying widow or widower for the two years following the year your spouse died. To do this, you must meet all four of the following tests: You were entitled to file a joint return with your spouse for the year he or she died. It does not matter whether you actually filed a joint return, You did not remarry in the two years following the year your spouse died, You have a child, stepchild, or adopted child (a foster child does not meet this requirement) for whom you can claim a dependency exemption, and You paid more than half the cost of maintaining a household that was the main home for you and that child, for the whole year. After the two years following the year in which your spouse died, you may qualify for head of household status. More detailed information on each filing status can be found in Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information. ********************** Additional Information Upon further reading on http://www.irs.gov/publications/p501/ar02.html#d0e3270 refer to section under qualifying dependents- "You cannot claim a person as a dependent unless that person is your qualifying child or qualifying relative." If you are not a relative you can not claim him nor can he claim you. Being someones partner does not cut it. If you do not change it you are heading for an audit.

Household budgeting...?

Q) We are a family of three (2 adults,1 toddler, baby on the way) living on one military income. We are trying to evaluate our monthly budget so we can save just a little more here and there. The only place we found that can give would be our grocery budget. Currently, we spend $200 to $250 on groceries (including household items) but I would love to go lower. Can someone give me some ideas on feeding a family of 3 for under $200 month/$50 week? Thanks!! : ) *This would have to include 3 meals a day plus snacks. **Looking for ways to pinch pennies in household too (making own cleaning supplies, etc.)

A) 1) Buy in bulk with other families 2) Make the meals ahead of time and freeze them. A large pan of lasagna can feed a family of 3 for about 4-5 meals. 3) Make your own snacks.

household income credit card app.?

Q) on credit card applications they always ask for "household income" .. i dont get it, if they wanted to know MY income, they would ask "what is your income" .. but they dont, they ask what is the income for my household.. are they just retarded and want to know the income of all the people who live in your house and dont care if its not your income or what? im going to apply for a credit card soon, so thats why im asking... is it ok to just put down the income for everyone in my house? what about situations such as if you have a roomate? is there any way they can even verify this or that it could get a person in trouble?

A) from what I know credit card companies don't know how much you make so whatever amount that you put on the application to them is real. Credit card companies can only look at your credit report, they don't have the right to find out how much you make. If you want to compar credit cards go to http://www.creditcardmate.com also you can go to http://www.hotloansources.com to get free tips and advices on credit

Household items attracted to a common magnet?

A) Anything that contains iron.

Household hints/tips?

Q) i remember seeing this old book my mom had it looked like it was from the 70's or so, but i cant find it, and i searched for questions on here and people responded with your question is too vague. anyway, this book was packed with household tips and hints for just about anything so can you name any household hints that would be good to know? here is one, shut the shower curtains when finished using the shower to keep soap scum and other type of muck build up, so the air doesnt get in as much. whats some of yours?

A) Leave the lid of your washing machine open after using, to prevent mold and mildew from building up. Cover the top of your refrigerator with saran wrap (or something like it) so that when it comes time to clean up there, all you have to do is lift it off and throw it away. If you run out of fabric softener, adding a couple towels to the wash will help cut down static in the dryer. Apply a light spray of furniture polish to your ceiling fan blades (especially the upper side) and it will help repel dust and grime. Dryer sheets in luggage and suitcases keep them smelling fresh when not being used. A solution of bleach and water in a spray bottle works just as well on mold in the shower or tub as those expensive store-bought products. And don't throw away a moldy shower curtain liner...just throw it in the washer with hot soapy water and some bleach! Toothbrushes need to be stored in the medicine cabinet and not out on the counter (not as convenient, but away from all kinds of germs). You can use brown eye or brow pencils to fill in scratches on furniture, depending on the shade you need. Those big bottles of body wash (from the Dollar store or Walmart) work just as well in your liguid hand soap dispensers as Soft Soap, ect. And all that hair conditioner we always seem to have left over works great when shaving your legs! Hope this helps some...and I'm looking forward to reading other people's ideas. Have a great day!

household cavalry?

Q) are men only allowed to be in the household cavalry and what exactly is the household cavalry?

A) Well ... they DO guard Buckingham Palace ... but they are NOT the guys in bearskin hats. The ones in bearskin hats are the Foot Guards (there are 5 regiments of them). The Household Cavalry consists of 2 regiments: The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st The Royal Dragoons). They are the oldest and most senior regiments in the British Army and are split between two different units equipped to perform two quite different roles. The role that most people know about is the ceremonial part - dressing up in shiny cuirasses and helmets with plumes, and riding on magnificent horses in processions and on guard duty in London. The role that most people do not know so much about is as fighting soldiers, equipped with armored fighting vehicles. In recent times, they fought in the Falklands (1982), the Gulf (1990) and, more recently, Bosnia and Kosovo. I am not 100% sure about the "men only" part of your question, but I do not think that women would be accepted as recruits for a Household Cavalry regiment. Although almost 10% of Britain's armed forces nowadays are females, women are not allowed to serve in units whose primary role is combat. And the main role of the Household Cavalry is indeed combat.
